Banda Sea, 26 January 2025

Today was another sea day. There were quite a few lectures and so on during the day, so it still felt quite full – though I have to admit there was plenty of time between activities and I still managed to fall asleep once, albeit briefly.

When we woke up it was raining quite heavily and that continued to the afternoon, so it felt like we were moving forward in a constant grey bubble or dome all day. And the waves had picked up enough that there was some swell and gentle movement in the boat most of the time. Which is a bit hard to capture, but it looked like this.

Anyway we went to a couple of lectures in the morning, then lunch, then a tour of engineering in the afternoon. Like the bridge tour yesterday this was surprisingly interesting. There are many different systems but the key bit is that, like many recent cruise ships, there are diesel generators that power everything and then electric engines powering azimuth pods. It was also impressive how spotlessly clean everything was.

We also fitted another lecture and a wine tasting into the afternoon before dinner. The main observations from talking to other passengers are that perhaps 80% have taken a cruise with this cruise line before, and virtually all are more widely travelled than we are.
